Here's how your donation helps:

Recently with the added support of the Toonies for Tummies our school was able provide a breakfast program. The school noticed that there were several students attending daily, that did not have the opportunity to access a breakfast meal at home before school. The school is currently funded for 200 students, but provides daily snack bins to all 11 classrooms in total and therfore there are anywhere up to 254+ students accessing those bins daily.

The Toonies4Tummies campaign is so beneficial to all schools as it really gives the schools that extra funding boost to ensure that their programs can be sustainable and available daily for students in the face of inflation, while continung to offer Protein and fresh produce, keeping the students well nourished and focused for a successful day of learning. Without the added generosity of so many community members and donating to the Toonies4Tummies Campaign, schools have had to pause or close their nutrition programs due to lack of funding.

With the help of Toonies for Tummies we have been able to nourish 135 kids with a healthy breakfast 5 days a week. Without help from programs like this we would have to cut back on the number of children participating or the number of days we run a week. We would also run out of money before the end of the school year.

Our Southwestern Ontario school has had an increase in student enrollment. The school is funded for 350 students, but they definitely have more students accessing the daily snack bins (school population is 456+ students) probably closer to 500 or more in enrollment this year. Toonies4Tummies has made a huge impact on being able to continue to sustain our daily nutritous offerings, as well as dairy once each week.

Recently, one of the students asked for a banana from the snack bin. Other students saw me handing out fruit and then asked for some. Before we knew it, all the clementines, bananas, and apples in our snack bin were gone, because all the kids wanted to eat fruit again. I think that's really one of the main benefits of this program; we are able to hand out healthy snacks, they see each other trying them and eating them, and then they want to eat them too. The Toonies4Tummies support the purchase and sustainabiltiy of fresh produce for the daily snack bins for the students. As food price inflation continues, the T4T really makes a positive impact in our ability to continue to offer fresh, wholesome and nutritous produce.

Toonies for Tummies allows our students to receive adequate protein, which is an issue for some families. The donations we receive foster a sense of community and solidarity among students, staff, and parents, highlighting the power of collective effort and compassion in addressing fundamental challenges. It has taught our students valuable lessons about empathy, kindness, and the importance of giving back, principles that extend far beyond the classroom walls.

We are so grateful to Canadians who support Toonies for Tummies during our annual store campaign and, year-round, online.

You may know on April 16th, the Federal Government confirmed plans to support student nutrition programs. Specifically, the budget has announced the creation of a National School Food Program, which will provide $1 billion over five years to Employment and Social Development Canada, Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada, and Indigenous Services Canada, starting in 2024‑25.

You may wonder what does this government funding mean specific to the need and our efforts to fundraise?

Without a doubt, we continue to need your support. While many student nutrition program leaders are encouraged by the incremental government support, many have taken to the news and social media to confirm even with this support, funding gaps will persist.

The Grocery Foundation's Vision, that no Canadian child goes to school hungry, remains fully intact. Our work continues and remains vital to support hungry children through their school’s student nutrition program. There is no change whatsoever in our focus, our mission, or our reliance on your support.

The programs we help fund are universal in nature. That means all children who require a healthy meal have access. Those on the front lines of these programs affirm their positive impact and positive halo beyond the day’s nutrition, from attendance, behaviours to the school community and mental health. The programs you help fund also support foundational nutrition knowledge and social skill building, as many programs include mechanisms for student involvement in menu planning, food preparation and serving of food to peers.

Thank you for choosing to support hungry children in your community, nourishing their health, well-being, academic success while fostering their school community. With your continued support, we will continue to help dreams take flight and nourish over 3,000 programs and neighbourhoods, yours among them.
